A lot of thought was put into that idea, and the answer was that it ate a lot of bandwidth (additional cost) and other sites that had it stopped offering it due to problems. Would it offer any value to the site? Unlikely, as what is typed is soon gone. Here, it stays posted for others to add their comments, read and digest the messages as many times as it takes to fully understand and appreciate them, and a lot more people will see a permanently-posted message than a fleeting instant message.

This site was intended to help people with questions or problems they may have, as well as to connect with like-minded folk. The forums allow this, whereas instant chat severely limits the number of people that can respond to a question or post.
